Toddy Filter Replacement Guide: Felt vs. Paper, and When to Change It

Felt vs. paper filters

The Toddy system ships with a reusable felt filter and can also use disposable paper filters. Felt produces a fuller-bodied, slightly richer concentrate since it lets more natural coffee oils through. Paper filters produce a lighter, cleaner-tasting cup closer to drip coffee, and they’re a fast option if you don’t want to wash and dry a felt filter between batches.

How long a felt filter lasts

With proper rinsing after every use and a weekly deep clean, a felt filter typically holds up for 60–80 batches, roughly 3–4 months of regular use. Signs it’s time to replace it: a musty smell that doesn’t clean out, visible dark spots, or fraying at the edges.

How to replace it

1. Remove the old filter and discard it
2. Rinse a new felt filter under cold water before first use to remove the papery taste
3. Place it in the bottom of the brewer exactly as the original was seated, then reinsert the rubber stopper

Where to buy replacements

Genuine Toddy felt filters (sold in packs) are the safest bet for a proper seal and consistent results — off-brand filters can vary in thickness and sometimes don’t seat properly, leading to leaks or excess sediment.
